15/02/2022

Portuguese wines were, with about a hundred distinctions, once again a success in the Wine Competition at Prodexpo Moscow, proof of the great acceptance of Portuguese wines in the Russian market.

There were 15 Portuguese companies awarded, including Adega de Ponte da Barca, Cooperativa de Pegões, Adega Cooperativa de Ponte de Lima, Casa Ermelinda Freitas, Casa Santos Lima, Caves de Santa Marta, Manzwine and Quinta de S. Sebastião, present in the collective stand of CAP - Confederation of Farmers of Portugal.

These companies bring from Russia to Portugal 2 Grand Prizes, 6 Stars, 57 Gold Medals, 29 Silver Medals and 3 Diplomas.

The 29th Prodexpo Moscow, the largest fair of the food sector in the Russian Federation, which took place this week and ends today, received the largest Portuguese delegation ever, with the presence of 29 national wine producers. The presence of the Portuguese wine sector in this event happens since 2014 and is organized by CAP.

Wine exports with exponential growth

The export of Portuguese wines to the Russian market has seen exponential growth in recent years. Between the year 2018 and 2021, the value of exports more than doubled, reaching 45 million last year. Currently, Portugal is the 5th supplier of wine to the Russian market and the prospects are for growth, says a press release from CAP.

For CAP's secretary general, Luís Mira, "this is a market that still has great growth potential for our wines considering the acceptance by consumers and the large size that this country has. For this to happen it is necessary to develop a work and a constant presence among importers, distributors and consumers in order to inform and value Portuguese wine. It is CAP's commitment to help domestic producers to expand their footprint in the Russian market.

The Embassy of Portugal in Russia was also involved in the success of this action, says the note of the Confederation, collaboration that CAP recognizes and thanks, as well as the local AICEP services. "Without the commitment of these entities, which make it possible to send the wines through diplomatic channels and with the support at the institutional level, these initiatives would certainly not have the same success.

New CAP actions in Russia

CAP has planned several promotional activities in Russia this year, in the cities of St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg, with the organization of wine tastings, masterclasses on Portuguese wines and wine dinners in reference restaurants.

These initiatives are aimed at importers, distributors, sommeliers, among other players in the wine market. The roadshow in Russia will be complemented with a trip to the Kazakhstan market, namely Astana and Almaty, where tastings, masterclasses and wine dinners will also be promoted.
