Marcelo wants EU / Africa institutional reconfiguration until the end of the Portuguese presidency
The President of the Republic, stated that cooperation between Europe and Africa must be " structurally changed" and called for "more new operational organizations".
The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said this Thursday that the European Union should strengthen its relationship with Africa through an institutional reconfiguration, finishing this process by the end of the Portuguese presidency.
The Portuguese President took this position during a conversation with the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, inserted in the third edition of the Euro-Africa Forum, which was held by videoconference, due to the covid-19 pandemic.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who spoke in English, said that cooperation between Europe and Africa must be "changed structurally", with "a new common framework" at the institutional level, considering that organizations "conceived in another era" are now "largely outdated" .
"It is a great challenge. A challenge in relation to the calendar: we must have decisions by October, when the summit between the European Union and the African Union will take place [during the German presidency]. We must have this closed during the Portuguese presidency [of the European Union] in the first half of next year".
