Export of goods with highest amount ever in March 2022

The first quarter of 2022 was marked by the growth of Portuguese exports, with March reaching the highest value to date. Spain, France, Germany and the USA were the main clients and Machines and Equipment were the main exported products.

According to data from the INE - National Statistics Institute, in March 2022, Exports of goods registered a growth of 13.6 percent compared to March of last year, and 10.7 percent compared to February 2022, reaching 6,604 million euros, the highest amount ever. In turn, imports were 9,019 million euros.

In accumulated values, from January to March 2022, exports of goods had an increase of 18.2 percent, amounting to 18,200 million euros. In the same period, imports totaled 24,847 million euros.

In the first quarter of the year, exports to the European Union increased by 20.2 percent, with the main export destinations being Spain, France, and Germany.

In turn, extra-EU exports increased 13.2 percent compared to the same period last year. The main extra-EU clients were the USA and the UK, which ranked fourth and seventh, respectively, in global terms.

The countries that contributed most to the overall growth of Portuguese exports were Spain with a 20.7 percent growth compared to the same period in 2021, followed by France, Germany and the United States.

By product groups, Machines and Equipment was the main export with a 13.3 percent share of the total, followed by Vehicles and Other Transport Material (12.4 percent).
